2 When you play with chords you change scales every time there is a chord change. When you do play with chord changes it’s important to land on a common note as you change scales.
Learn Guitar Scales ‘Crabwise’
This is a very good method you can use to master several scales at once. Begin by playing the scale downwards from the lowest string to the highest pitched string. When you come to the highest pitched note you can play on that scale you can start playing a new scale.This is easier to explain with an example.
Let’s take the D major scale. Play the D Major scale from the lowest pitch note to the highest. When you reach the highest pitch note begin playing the D# major scale from the highest pitch to the lowest.
Remember That Repetition In A Song Is Not Only Good It Is Necessary
Scott Henderson discusses this in one of his You Tube videos. I won’t go into it in detail now but when you’re playing solos it’s important to have a certain amount of repetition otherwise the listener can never get a ‘feel’ for the song.
Try Not To Get Stuck Playing Only Box Scales
This is a great tip from Joe Cefalu. Learning scales is best done on a string by string basis first so you sue the entire fretboard. If you learn scales using the box position method your playing can begin to sound motionless and dull.
Learn Guitar Scales In Terms Of Both Notes And Scale Intervals
The best way to gain a full understanding of guitar scales is to learn them in terms of both intervals and notes. Try to remember that a scales notes are not the important part, but by the intervals between them. When you play scale using intervals you will have a better feel for the way a sequence should sound and what works.
Keep An Eye On The ‘bad’ Sounding Notes
Sometimes when you are playing a scale over a chord you will hit on a note that although theoretically correct sounds wrong. Try to keep these notes in my so you can avoid them in the future.
