Do you really need to know how to fix a dishwasher? Why? Do you need to save money? Perhaps you don’t want to shop around for a new one? Is someone pushing you to repair it? Do you just like taking things apart? Are you preparing for a party and you need to clean lots of dishes?

Regardless of your reasons, I’ll show you how to fix a dishwasher. Firstly get familiar with your unit. Take out the owners manual, read it through, and look at troubleshooting. A lot of times when the manual says call a technician you just might be able to repair it yourself.

After getting familiar with it, you will most likely have to pull it out from under the counter. This will give you best access to it.

Since water and electronics are a bad combination, this leads to breakdowns.

Most breakdowns you will be able to fix. Before you call a repairman, you might be able to save money. I’ll show you now a simple repair of one of the most common problems.

Follow these repair tips:

1) Do you have dirty dishes after washing? If this is the case, just relax. This might be very easy: is the shut-off valve off, which feeds the water coming into the machine? The water shut-off valve, which is under the kitchen sink, should be checked. Be positive that it is turned on.

Also check the spray arms for clogs, this is easy, then unclog them. Since most spray arms are poorly designed food gets clogged in the opening, and you can’t take them apart. You can clean out the arms with the garden hose, putting high pressure water through them, this works great.

Put about 300 ml of vinegar in it instead of detergent and run the machine without dishes inside. The full cycle should be run here. This should do a great job of cleaning it. So after the dishes have been washed, are they still dirty, is there water left in the bottom of the machine? This might mean that your outlet is clogged: you will have to clean any of the filters at the bottom of the machine. Another thing you can do is check the outlet valve, and hose under the dishwasher.

Not long ago I too followed the directions above, but my dishes still remained dirty. How can this be? More clogs you could not see. Always look deeper inside! And that’s what I did. I dug deeper into the unit and realized that I was able to clean a filter I had not see before. This nasty filter was blocked with sediments. I cleaned it and everything was fine after that! If you have water that is hard it will build white hard sediments in the filters openings.
