Children Can Learn Healthy Habits

Early childhood is a prime time to help children begin to establish healthy habits or behaviors that will promote a healthy lifestyle. They need to learn from their parents how to do this. A parent can keep in mind a few things as they are showing their children how to make the right choices. First, learning becomes more meaningful when the experience is woven into the children’s daily experiences. In order for something to become a habit it must be performed numerous times before it becomes a habit.
Everyone should be taught at an early age to wash their hands before they touch food. Good hand washing requires three elements. You need detergent, water, and effort. Handwashing should occur often during the course of the day. Good hygiene is the first step to staying healthy throughout the cold and flu season and beyond.
Another healthy habit that kids must develop is to get enough sleep. Studies show lack of sufficient sleep can contribute to inattention, hyperactivity, and disagreeableness among children. There is plenty of studies that have figured out what is the right amount of sleep for all children to follow as a guideline.
Children must understand the importance of eating right. Good nutrition is a wonderful foundation for wellness. Adults and children alike can benefit from eating many different kinds of foods. That means making sure that the whole food pyramid is used when deciding what to eat. It is hard for many people to actually eat a wide variety of foods on a daily basis. The increased dependence on the drive thrus have added to this problem. Many kids have very specific likes and dislikes that make a balanced diet harder to achieve. A parent doesn’t have to prod a child to hard to get them up an moving about in some form if the activity is made to be fun. Although video games are fun for children they do not promote much actual physical activity. Maintain a good attitude. Praise your children. Being positive with your kids will make them want to follow the right choices more and more often. There is a shared responsibility for all of our children’s needs that falls on not only the people who are related but to all of the people who touch a child’s life.
